Roofing and Housing Styles



Roofing Styles


Gable Roof- two sloped sides


Gambrel Roof- Has the look of a barn with four slopes


Hip Roof- four sloped sides    



Mansard Roof- two sets of four sided slopes  



Saltbox Roof- two slopes except one is longer than the other




Shed Roof-  one sided slope  





Housing Characteristics


Bay Window- sticks out of house slightly with one or more windows




Dormer Window- a window on a sloping roof  







Casement Window is attached to the frame by one or more hinges. 
















Palladian Window-  Round center with two rectangle windows








Sidelights- two windows on the side of a door(usually a front door)


     Fanlight- Half circle window about a exterior door.















Portico- A large circular porch in the front, usually with pillars

Eaves-  The over hang on roofs

Pediment- a triangular crown over doors or window, seen in Greek styling


Rafters- Roof beams

Turret- A small tower attached to a house, mostly a Queen Anne styling of house
 

Clapboard Siding- Layered siding, used in Colonial styled housing
